State of the Word

Each year – usually at the end of WordCamp US – we are presented with the State of the Word, a presentation of where WordPress stands and what to look forward to in the future. This year, it did not happen at the end of WordCamp US (virtual), so it has been scheduled for today, December 14th.

In just a few hours, Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress and current CEO, will address the WordPress industry from New York to discuss the past and future of the project.

Today’s announcement said that attendees and viewers can expect to hear about WordPress 5.9, Openverse (WordPress’ search engine project for openly-licensed media), and Web3 and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

While each of the topics listed above will be interesting to hear about, I hope that some other topics are discussed as well. In 2021, WordPress saw a huge division resulting from Gutenberg and the direction of the project. I, personally, hope that there is some mention of how we can reunite around the progress that has been made.

Either way, it’ll be an interesting night. The State of the Word will be live-streamed at 5pm EST. You can watch it on the WordPress YouTube channel or right here in the video embedded below!
